In this article, we’ll be taking a veritable hot dog tour around the US as we pay homage to some of the best versions you can try. From our personal favorite, the Chicago-style dog, to the classic Coney Island variety, join us as we explore the wonderful world of this beloved treat.

Chicago-Style

This style is one of the more complex versions of the hot dog. It starts with an all-beef frankfurter nestled in a poppyseed bun, then made better with the introduction of chopped onions and tomatoes, pickle spears, pickled peppers, green relish, mustard, and celery salt.

New York-Style

Another contender for the most iconic American hot dog is the New York style of preparation. This version is also traditionally made with a beef frankfurter, but the bun it’s placed in is the regular kind. The toppings include spicy brown mustard and sauerkraut, with the optional addition of onions cooked in tomato paste.

Atlanta-Style

They do things differently over in Atlanta, but to mouthwatering results nonetheless. This version can use beef or pork hot sausages, although it’s not uncommon for a blend of both types of meat to be used. The dog is placed in a regular bun and topped with its signature ingredient, coleslaw—usually as a contrast to a flavorful chili or barbecue sauce.

Kansas-Style

Resembling a Reuben more than the typical hot dog, Kansas-style hot dogs combine an all-pork sausage with sauerkraut and melted cheese—encased in a regular or sesame seed bun. Thousand island dressing is another common ingredient, making this one of the more unique and interesting versions we’ve seen.

Seattle-Style

Perhaps we spoke too soon, as Seattle’s version is another one that’s sure to turn some heads. This hot dog’s defining feature is rich cream cheese, something that people will either hate or love. As for the rest of the ingredients, common options include hot sauce, barbecue sauce, mustard, sauerkraut, and jalapeno peppers.

Sonoran

This is a version of the hot dog that’s popular in southern Arizona. It features touches of Mexican influence, as evidenced by the addition of pinto beans and salsa. Other typical toppings also include onions, tomatoes, mustard, and mayonnaise. And did we mention that the hot dog itself is wrapped in bacon?!

Coney Dogs

This version’s a little controversial, as its origins are still widely debated. Regardless of that, however, the common denominating factor is a rich chili smothered generously on top of an all-beef or beef-and-pork frankfurter. Raw, chopped onions and, sometimes, cheese are also added into the equation.

Conclusion

There you have it! While there are obviously endless ways you can enjoy a hot dog, these are some of the most memorable versions we’ve come across. Remember when it comes to hot dogs: you’re always free to have it your way, but there’s something to be said about getting to try versions that have reached regional acclaim.
